Roof Sheathing Over 1x6

Friend of mine had a big leak in his roof.

As roofing contractors in seattle we are often asked why do we need plywood over our old solid sheathing. Roof decks on homes built before 1970 are often 1 8 fir pre plywood shiplap. Small glitches have relatively easy remedies. Tiles were designed so that lugs or short protrusions on the top backside of each tile would hook over the step sheathing.

The main advantage of sheathing a roof with plywood is that it goes on faster. On 24 1x6 will work but put a layer of sheathing down to eliminate the roofing nail issue. Until the 1940s exterior grade plywood was not available. After all sheathing has plenty of holes cut in it already for vents.

In my experience the need for tongue and groove or edge clips is determined by the thickness of the roof sheathing and the spacing of the rafters. The keyword here is solid it used to be standard to use shiplap 1 boards tongue groove or other boards for the roof deck.

Roof deck 2x6 or 1x6 t g we use 1x6 up to 3 but the roof is then strapped after with 2x4 then sheathing. Some use clips as convenient spacers. Sometimes there are large gaps between the boards and a layer of osb or plywood is placed over the existing sheathing. Rafters it shouldn t be an issue.

For instance a branch through the roof can be largely ignored just fix the finish roofing material and don t worry about a little hole in the sheathing. I do not recommend 3 8 plywood for roof sheathing installed directly on the roof joists. The roofer has been tearing the old roof off and has found that the sheathing is dimensional lumber. Was your roof originally built with shiplap.

Sheathing is installed over multiple trusses rafters so it essentially turns them into one cohesive unit instead of individual structural members. Step sheathing can then be applied over the solid sheathing as needed. Unless your roof deck is in really rotten shape leave it alone and just replace any rotted boards or sections with new 1x6. More recently however most roofers recommend solid sheathing on the roof to give the house additional resistance to movement or shear strength.
