Roofing Nails For First Layer

For dimensional shingles being installed over a layer of existing dimensional shingles you should always use a 1 1 2 inch roofing nail.

Install the eave piece first then the rake piece over it. Roll roofing is often installed over bare wood sheathing or sheathing that has been painted with a primer. Paint a thin layer of adhesive over the first felt layer. The membrane used must have a polyester carrier to ensure good tensile strength.

Ensure the felt remains even and straight as you work. Nail metal drip edge flashing which bends over the roof and down the edge of the facing board on all roof edges. The two pieces should meet neatly at the corners. You will be placing the second layer of felt over this.

Bring the ridge edges together with a ridge capping layer.

The first layer of modified bitumen is then laid over the membrane before being cut to size to fit the surrounding area. Fasten drip edge on eaves with galvanized nails and a hammer about 12 inches. It s best to start nailing in the center and work out from there. Applying roofing felt first will better protect the sheathing against condensation as well as against leaking.

Apply the shingles to all roof planes ending a row of shingles at the top of the plane which is the ridge or peak and cut to follow the profile of any outside corners. You ll need longer nails for this part as you re driving through more layers of shingles. The first bituminous membrane sheet should then be positioned onto the roof before being secured to the surface typically using a nail gun. You can either use special shingles called ridge shingles or cut a number of regular shingles into 3 tabbed equal pieces and bend each so they fit snugly on the roof peak and nail them into place.

Using galvanised clout nails nail down the first layer of felt.
